Modeling Biofilms: From Genes to Communities

Biofilms are spatially-structured communities of different microbes, which have a huge impact on both ecosystems and human life. Mathematical models are powerful tools for understanding the function and evolution of biofilms as diverse communities. In this article, we give a review of some recently-developed models focusing on the interactions of different species within a biofilm, the evolutio...

Mathematical modeling of diffusion regulated Quorum sensing in Artificially Structured Microbial Consortia (ASMC)

A mathematical model, involving diffusion of extracellular compounds and cell interactions, has been adapted, in order to assess the quorum sensing process occurring in biofilms. Quorum sensing is a diffusion dependent phenomenon; therefore, accumulation levels of extra-cellular substances can directly affect cellular development. In order to modeling quorum sensing from artificially structured...

Modeling sorption of emerging contaminants in biofilms

A mathematical model for emerging contaminants sorption in multispecies biofilms, based on a continuum approach and mass conservation principles is presented. Diffusion of contaminants within the biofilm is described using a diffusion-reaction equation. Binding sites formation and occupation are modeled by two systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations are mutually connected through t...

Persistence in a single species CSTR model with suspended flocs and wall attached biofilms.

We consider a mathematical model for a bacterial population in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with wall attachment. This is a modification of the Freter model, in which we model the sessile bacteria as a microbial biofilm. Our analysis indicates that the results of the algebraically simpler original Freter model largely carry over. In a computational simulation study, we find that t...

A SEGMENTED REGRESSION MODEL FOR DESCRIPTION OF MICROBIAL GROWTH

A segmented regression model for the description of microbial growth has been suggested. The model is able to predict the exponential growth, logistic growth, logistic growth with a phase of decline, diauxic growth, microbial growth in synchronous cultures and the oscillatory growth
